Obituary for Helen L. Black

Helen Louise Black, age 96, formerly of McConnellsburg, PA passed away November 14, 2018 at Menno Haven Nursing Home in Chambersburg, PA. Helen was born to Mary and S. McDowell Houck on January 9, 1922 at New Granada, PA. Helen graduated from Robertsdale HS in 1939 and from Huntingdon Secretarial School in 1941. She worked for the State of PA in Harrisburg from 1941 to 1944, and retired from the Fulton County Medical Center in 1986 after 20 years of service. Helen married the late Merrill W. (Bud) Black on June 29, 1943. In the many years that Helen and Bud lived in McConnellsburg, she was a member of the Saxton chapter of the Eastern Star, a member of the McConnellsburg Volunteer Fire Company Auxiliary and a member of St Paul Lutheran Church. They loved to travel, and over the years they saw most of the United States. When Helen and Bud moved to Menno Haven in Chambersburg in 1997, both quickly got involved in volunteer activities, and Helen happily served the community for many years in various volunteer roles, working in the library and gift shop, escorting residents to doctor's appointments and ushering in the Chapel. Helen loved her family and had a strong belief in her God. She will be missed for her kind words, friendly smile and willingness to find good in everyone she met.

Helen is survived by her children: Robert Mack Black (Pam), Sharon Remaly Czerw (George), and Lynn Black (Annette), grandchildren: Traci Colyer (Dane), Johanna Kapura (Dave), Tim Black (April), Sarah Black and Michael Black and great grandchildren: Kylie, Kate, Hanna, Liam and Danica. Helen is also survived by her brother in law Carl Knepper, sisters in law Delores Houck and Hazel Black Cutchall, and many nieces and nephews.

Helen is pre-deceased by her husband in 2000, by her sister Margaret (Betty) Knepper and brother Donald Houck.

A memorial service will be held at the Chapel at Menno Haven in Chambersburg, PA on November 27, 2018 at 1:30 P.M. Online condolences may be expressed at
